There is some discussion in our community about the ethics and efficacy of the Covid vaccine.

I encourage you to be vaccinated. These are the reasons why I say this. I do not have specialist knowledge about such a complex matter. So I freely and consciously accept the advice of the World Health Organisation, backed up by the Ministry of Health in NZ, regarding the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine. With regard to the moral and theological issues that this response to the pandemic raises, I turn to the teaching from Pope Francis and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the NZ Catholic Bishops’ Conference and NZ’s national Catholic Bioethics Centre.  All are unequivocal in their encouragement of people to receive the vaccine.
